Why Make This Recipe

This cocktail is not just easy to make, but it is also a delightful mix of flavors. The gin adds a smooth base, while cucumber gives it a refreshing crunch. Basil adds a lovely herbal aroma that elevates the drink. Plus, with only a few simple ingredients, you can whip up this delightful drink in no time!

How to Make Gin and Cucumber Basil Smash

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for decorating the glass – optional)
  • 8 basil leaves
  • 8 slices cucumber (about 5mm thick)
  • 2 tbsp sugar syrup (*See Tip)
  • 50 ml (1.75 oz) gin (Tanqueray or Hendricks is a good choice)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Crushed ice
  • Splash of tonic water (my fave is naturally light Fever Tree)
  • Strips of cucumber (use a vegetable peeler to make these)
  • A few basil leaves to decorate

Directions:

  1. Make a sugar rim on the glass by dipping the rim of the glass in a small bowl of water. Spread the granulated sugar on another plate and dip the rim into the sugar.
  2. Place the basil leaves and cucumber slices into a cocktail shaker. Muddle (or gently bash) them with a muddler or wooden spoon. You want to bruise them until the scent comes out.
  3. Add the sugar syrup, gin, lemon juice, and some crushed ice to the shaker. Shake it all together vigorously until you see frost forming on the outside of the shaker.
  4. Fill your prepared glass with ice and strain the cocktail into the glass.
  5. Top up your drink with tonic water. Decorate it with strips of cucumber and a few basil leaves.

How to Serve Gin and Cucumber Basil Smash

Serve this cocktail chilled in the decorated glass. It’s perfect for summer gatherings, backyard BBQs, or just a relaxing evening at home. You can also serve it with some light snacks or appetizers to complement the flavors.

How to Store Gin and Cucumber Basil Smash

It is best to enjoy this cocktail fresh. If you have leftovers, you can keep it in the refrigerator in a sealed container for a few hours. However, the flavors may change, and the drink may become less fizzy.

Tips to Make Gin and Cucumber Basil Smash

  • Always use fresh basil and cucumber for the best taste.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar syrup based on your sweetness preference.
  • Don’t skip on shaking the mixture well. It helps to combine all the flavors and chill the drink perfectly.

Variation

You can experiment with different herbs like mint or thyme instead of basil for a unique flavor twist. Additionally, try using a different gin or adding a splash of fruit juice to change it up!

FAQs

1. Can I make a non-alcoholic version?

Yes! You can replace gin with tonic water for a refreshing mocktail. Just use more cucumber and basil for flavor.

2. What kind of gin should I use?

Any quality gin works well, but Tanqueray or Hendricks are popular choices for their botanical flavors that complement the cucumber and basil.

3. How can I make sugar syrup at home?

To make sugar syrup, simply mix equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan. Heat it until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool before using.
