Ingredients

For the custard

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt

For cooking

  • 2 tablespoons butter for cooking

For serving

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream for serving

Main ingredient

  • 1 package (12 rolls) Hawaiian rolls (King’s Hawaiian preferred)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  • Carefully separate or slice the Hawaiian rolls apart, keeping them thick and pillowy.

Cooking

  • Place the rolls in a shallow dish and pour the custard over them. Let them soak for about 30 seconds per side.
  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Once melted and sizzling, add the soaked rolls.
  • Cook until golden brown on each side, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  • Stack the rolls on a plate, dust with powdered sugar, and drizzle with maple syrup. Top with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the microwave or on a skillet for a quick breakfast. For extra flavor, consider adding nutmeg or orange zest to the custard mix.
