Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 3 ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk

For the Frosting

  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter
  • 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour a large baking sheet that is at least 18 x 13 x 1.5 inches and set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour and sugar.
  • In a medium saucepan, add butter, cocoa powder, shortening, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Pour the hot cocoa mixture over the flour mixture. Mix until combined.
  • Add vanilla extract, buttermilk, baking soda, and salt. Mix until combined.
  • Add eggs and mix until thoroughly combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking sheet and tap the pan on the counter.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes or until the center springs back when gently pressed.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting

  • In a saucepan, add butter, cocoa powder, and milk. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Remove from heat and stir in powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until smooth.
  • Spread over the cooled cake and sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired.

Notes

Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature for the best results. Don’t overmix the batter after adding the eggs to keep the cake light and fluffy. You can replace the nuts with chocolate chips for a variation.
