Ingredients

For the Sandwich

  • 8 slices white sandwich bread
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices deli ham
  • 8 slices deli turkey

For the Egg Mixture

  • 3 large eggs

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For Spreading

  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

For Serving

  • powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • raspberry jam (for serving)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Add the butter and olive oil to a large skillet and heat over medium.
  • Lay the slices of bread out on a baking sheet or a clean surface.
  • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard. Divide it among the pieces of bread, spreading a light layer on each slice.
  • For each sandwich, place 1 slice of Swiss cheese on each side of the bread. On one piece, add 2 slices of ham and another slice of Swiss on top of the ham.
  • Add 2 slices of turkey on top of the cheese and ham. Then, place the other piece of bread on top to complete the sandwich.

Cooking

  • Whisk the eggs in a shallow bowl. Carefully dredge each side of the sandwich in the egg mixture until coated.
  • Place the sandwich in the hot skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the meats and cheese are heated through.

Serving

  • Slice the sandwiches in half, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with raspberry jam on the side.

Notes

Serve the Monte Cristo warm, immediately after cooking. Feel free to experiment with different cheeses or meats. Don’t skip the powdered sugar; it adds a nice sweet touch that balances the richness of the sandwich.
