  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

For the gravy

  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil (for searing)
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil (for mushrooms)
  • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
  • 2 packets brown gravy mix
  • 2 1/4 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • optional Fresh minced parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, bread crumbs, beaten egg, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until combined.
  • Shape the mixture into 4 equal patties that are about 3/4 inch thick.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, heat the cooking oil to medium-high heat.
  • Place the patties in the oil and sear them for about 3 minutes until browned and almost cooked through.
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate covered with aluminum foil to keep them warm.
  • In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of cooking oil over medium heat and add the sliced mushrooms.
  • Sauté the mushrooms for 5 – 6 minutes until they are tender.
  • Add in the brown gravy mix and gradually stir in the water. Whisk until smooth, then add the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and add the patties back into the skillet with the gravy mixture. Simmer for about 7 – 10 minutes until the patties are cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.
  • Check for seasoning and add additional salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

Make sure to mix the beef mixture thoroughly, but don’t overwork it to keep the patties tender. Adjust seasoning to taste and feel free to customize with spices or herbs.
