Ingredients

Oat Streusel Topping

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats not quick oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar dark or light
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup cold butter 1 stick, cut into small cubes

Caramel Apple Filling

  • 6 pieces apples any kind
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar dark or light; dark preferred
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ cup caramel sauce homemade or store-bought; use your favorite

Serving

  • cups vanilla ice cream
  • as needed additional caramel sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Make the Oat Streusel Topping: In a bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the cold butter cubes. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to blend them until the mixture is crumbly.
  • Make the Caramel Apple Filling: Peel and slice the apples. In another bowl, toss the apple slices with the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and caramel sauce.

Baking

  • Layer the apple mixture in a baking dish and top it with the oat streusel mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbly.

Notes

Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor. Don’t skip the lemon juice; it gives a nice tang and helps keep the apples fresh. Feel free to add nuts to the streusel topping for extra crunch.
