Ingredients
  

For the Filling

  • 5 cups fresh apples (sliced) Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon For flavor enhancement in the topping.
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted) (1/2 stick)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a deep dish pie plate or a large baking dish with butter or cooking spray and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Mix well until all the apples are evenly coated. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture is well coated and crumbly.
  • Sprinkle this crumb mixture evenly over the top of the apples.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-60 minutes, or until the fruit is soft and the topping is golden brown.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream on top, and optionally drizzle some caramel sauce over the top. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave.
